If a droid has a hovering form of locomotion could he fly across a ravine or would he fall into it if he moved over the great empty portion?

Page 188 of the book clearly answers the question: max altitude is 3 meters. Take a guess what happens if you go over a cliff?
Just to be clear: hovering droids can fall and can smash into the ground. That's why flying is a separate type of locomotion."My personal advice to you and everyone else who plays Saga: No matter what an official ruling is, if it strikes you as stupid, just ignore it and go with your gut."

okay I thoughts so just wanted to be sure, if such a droid was following a ledge would an acrobatics skill check be required to see if it could stay positioned above it or risk falling?

That's a judgment call for the GM and depends on how wide the ledge is.

So then a hoverbot can't go on the high wire without GM permission?

Not without an acrobatics check.
