Rules for Dark Side Spirits

March 18th, 2008

Designed by Nick Prince. Editted by Matthew “Tao” Myers.

Dark Side Spirit

Stats: a Dark Side Spirit is no longer even physical, and because of this loses its Constitution score.
Hit Points: Because a Dark Side Spirit has lost its Constitution score, it loses all Hit Points gained from its Constitution bonus. However, increase its hit point die for each level by one die class (d6 > d8 > d10 > d12).
Speed: The spirit retains the speed and mode of movement that it had in life. Becoming a Spirit does not allow him or her to fly for example. However, being non-physical allows the spirit to pass through physical objects as if they were not there.
Dark Side Points: A Spirit retains its Dark Side points. However, if the Dark Side Spirit’s amount of Dark Side points ever drops below its Wisdom score it is destroyed. It is kept in the universe through its connection to the Dark Side; losing this connection to the Dark Side instantly destroys the Spirit.

Defenses

Fortitude: The Dark Side Spirit loses its Fortitude defense. Any attacks, abilities, or Force powers used against the Spirit that would be rolled against Fortitude Defense automatically fail. The Spirit has no body and cannot be harmed physically.
Reflex: Physical attacks or abilities used against the Spirit automatically fail, as the Spirit has no physical body to be hit by an attack. Force powers, however, are still rolled against the Spirit’s Reflex defense.
Will: Because the Dark Side Spirit is kept alive through dark means and force of will, the Spirit’s damage threshold uses its Will defense rather than its Fortitude defense. It gains a +4 Dark Side bonus to its Will save upon becoming a Spirit.

Attacks, Skills, Feats, and Talents

Attacks: With no physical body, the Dark Side Spirit can not use physical attacks or abilities. It can only use Force powers to attack opponents. Similarly, any attacks made against the Spirit which would physically affect the spirit (examples: a lightsaber attack, thrown or hurled items, or Force abilities such as Force Grip or Force Slam) and any abilities that grant a damage bonus through the Force (examples: Power of the Dark Side, Empower Weapon) do not affect a Dark Side Spirit.
Skills: Any skills that reference Constitution as the key stat (such as Endurance) use the Spirit’s Charisma score instead.
Feats and Talents: For feats and talents that require a minimum Constitution score (such Shake it Off), the Spirit instead uses its Charisma score.

Force Powers

Only powers that would affect the Spirit with the Force, rather than using the Force to physically affect them, have an effect on the Spirit. In addition, the following powers have additional effects against Dark Side Spirits:
Vital Transfer: The power of the light side is devastating to a Dark Side Spirit, and any use of Vital Transfer to a Spirit deals damage to it equal to twice the target’s darkside score. Using Vital Transfer in this way requires that the users Use the Force check exceeds the Spirit’s Will defense.

Special Abilities

Manifestation: The Spirit can appear visibly and audibly at will, but remains non-physical. In order to use a Force power, a Spirit must manifest itself.
Possess: A Spirit may attempt to possess the body of a person with a Dark Side score of at least 1. To possess a target, the Spirit makes a special attack (1d20 + Character level + Charisma) against the target’s Will defense. If the check fails, the Dark Side Spirit may not attempt to possess that body ever again. The Spirit may leave the body as a move action.
If the Spirit succeeds, it retains its Intelligence, Wisdom and Charisma scores. The body retains its Strength, Dexterity and Constitution scores (any permanent effects to these scores while the Spirit possesses it are retained as well, as are any Species abilities). The Spirit uses the possessed body’s Hit Points until it no longer possesses the body. Traits unique to the Spirit in relation to physical effects (lack of Fortitude score, can’t be physically affected, etc.) are lost until the Spirit no longer possesses the body. If the body is destroyed, the Spirit is forced out, but not otherwise affected.
The original owner of the body is subsumed, creating a new Force spirit. It may attempt to repossess its original body any number of times, but does not succeed on a natural 20. This new Spirit also is not anchored by the Dark Side but simply the Force itself, and because of this does not require its Dark Side Point total to be equal to or higher than its Wisdom score to survive. This new spirit follows all other rules of being a Dark Side Spirit.
An uninhabited body (such as a body that was possessed and then abandoned by the Spirit) effectively has no Will defense, and can be possessed by any Spirit.
Force Travel: A Dark Side Spirit may travel through the Force more or less instantly to any point in the galaxy tainted by the Dark Side, and the Spirit must be familiar with the location (the Spirit can’t ‘blindly jump’). To do this, the Spirit makes a check using its Character level as a modifier:

DISTANCE DC
Same city 0
Same continent 5
Same planet 10
Same system 15
Same sector 20
Same region 25
Same galaxy 30
Dark Side Influence DC Modifier Example
None +20 Anything with no Dark Side presence
Dim +5 A person with less than half their Wis score in Dark Side points
Faint -0 A person with more than half their Wis score in Dark Side points
Moderate -2 A person with more Dark Side points than their Wis score; a weak Dark Side artifact
Strong -5 A place touched by the Dark Side; a strong Dark Side artifact
Overwhelming -8 A place infused with the Dark side; a powerful Dark Side artifact

A spirit who fails this check may not attempt to travel to that location for 24 hours.

Only powers that would affect the Spirit with the Force, rather than using the Force to physically affect them, have an effect on the Spirit.

How can a Dark Side Spirit be hurt, besides Vital Transfer? Would corruption work or force blast? In the comics and writeup in the KotOR book, Freedon Nadd and Exar Kun, both destroyed Dark Side Spirits using force powers.

Also, if a PC is possessed by a spirit, they become Force Spirits and not Dark Spirits. Do they have the same travel restrictions to Dark Side locations? Can they in turn possess another creature?

Essentially, throwing a box at them or throwing them at a wall, choking them, etc won’t work with the Force, because they’re non-physical. Something else does need to be able to hurt them though…

Oi, Sever Force used to disable them pretty quickly, treating their very existence as using a Force Power.

I would say generic Force-spirits don’t have the same movement restrictions. But I don’t know about them possessing others…
